When you picture your wedding day, does it actually look like a huge guest list, a packed timeline and a traditional ballroom?

Or maybe you picture something a little more relaxed.
Just the two of you. Your closest people. A beautiful outdoor ceremony. A family farm. A small-town venue. Dinner with the people you love most. Maybe even a little road trip built into your wedding day.
An intimate wedding or elopement can look however you want it to.
And honestly, you don’t have to travel across the country to find beautiful places to make that kind of day happen. Iowa has plenty of them—but if you do want to travel across the country, I’m completely on board with that too.
One of my favorite things about photographing weddings is getting to travel, see new places and create somewhere different.
I’m based in Mt. Pleasant in Southeast Iowa, but that doesn’t mean your wedding has to be close to me for me to photograph it.
I recently had the opportunity to second shoot a beautiful wedding near Dubuque, Iowa, and it was such a fun reminder of how much I love getting outside of my usual area. The rolling countryside, open fields and beautiful views made such a gorgeous backdrop for their day.

It also got me thinking about just how many incredible places there are for couples who want to do something a little different.
Your wedding doesn’t necessarily need to happen at a huge, traditional wedding venue. You just need a place that feels like you.
The word elopement can mean something completely different to every couple.
Maybe it’s just the two of you.

Maybe you invite your immediate family and a handful of your closest friends.
Maybe you still want the dress, the flowers, the beautiful details, dinner and a celebration—you just don’t want 200 people there.
Maybe you want to throw tradition out the window altogether.
There really isn’t a rulebook.
Your wedding day could mean getting ready together at a cozy Airbnb, exchanging vows somewhere outdoors, bringing your dog along, spending extra time taking portraits, getting married on a family farm or private property, exploring a new town together, having dinner at your favorite restaurant afterward or planning the entire day around a beautiful sunset.
Or maybe you rent a cabin, invite your closest people and turn your wedding into an entire weekend together.
That’s what I love about intimate weddings and elopements. You have the freedom to decide what actually matters to the two of you and build your day around that.

If your dogs are part of your family, why shouldn’t they be part of your wedding day, too? 🤍
I had so much fun photographing this couple with their dogs, and I honestly love when couples find little ways to make their wedding day feel personal to them.
Maybe that means including your pups in the ceremony, bringing them along for portraits, or just having them there for part of the day. If your furry best friends are part of your story, I’m all for including them.
After all, an intimate wedding or elopement is about creating a day that feels like you—and sometimes that absolutely includes the dogs.
When you think about getting married in Iowa, you might immediately picture cornfields and barns—and while I’m certainly not complaining about either of those, there is so much more to explore.
There are rolling hills and open countryside, river views along the Mississippi, historic small towns, beautiful downtown architecture, gardens, parks and private properties tucked all over the state.

Southeast Iowa has some gorgeous countryside and small towns. Northeast Iowa and the Dubuque area have rolling landscapes and river views that feel completely different. Iowa City and the surrounding area give you another mix of city, nature and unique venues.
And sometimes the perfect place isn’t a wedding venue at all.
Maybe it’s your grandparents’ farm. Your parents’ backyard. A piece of property that’s been in your family forever. A park you love. A cabin you’ve rented for the weekend. Or somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit together.
The location doesn’t have to be impressive to everyone else. It just has to mean something to you.
While I love photographing couples here in Iowa, I’m absolutely not limiting elopements and intimate weddings to my home state.
For elopements and intimate weddings, I will travel anywhere in the United States.
So if you’re dreaming about saying your vows in the mountains, somewhere along the coast, in the middle of the desert, in a tiny town you’ve fallen in love with or at a destination that’s meaningful to the two of you—please don’t look at my Mt. Pleasant, Iowa address and assume I’m too far away.
You pick the place. I’ll bring the cameras. 🤍
For larger, more traditional wedding days, I primarily photograph weddings throughout Iowa and surrounding areas that are within driving distance. But I’m always open to hearing what you’re planning, so if you love my work and you’re wondering whether I’ll travel to you, just ask!
Don’t let the map make the decision for you.
There’s something really special about having fewer people around on a wedding day.
With a smaller guest list, there’s often more room to slow down.
More time to actually be together.
More time for photographs without feeling like we’re racing the clock.
More time to talk to the people who came to celebrate with you.
More flexibility to wander somewhere beautiful, stop when the light is perfect or completely change the plan because something else sounds more fun.
Your wedding day doesn’t have to feel like a production or a checklist of things you’re supposed to do.
It can just feel like you two.

And from a photography perspective, I love the freedom that gives us to create images that feel intentional, romantic and personal to your relationship—not just rush through a list of required wedding-day photos.
Whether you’re planning an elopement with just the two of you, an intimate wedding surrounded by your closest people or a more traditional wedding day, I’d love to hear what you’re dreaming up.
I’m an Iowa wedding and elopement photographer based in Mt. Pleasant, serving Southeast Iowa, Iowa City, Dubuque, Northeast Iowa and beyond.
For larger wedding days, I’m happy to travel throughout Iowa and surrounding areas within driving distance.
And for elopements and intimate weddings? Anywhere in the U.S. is fair game.
So if you’ve found a venue, family property, little town, mountain, coastline or completely unexpected place that feels perfect for the two of you, don’t worry about whether it’s too far from my home base.
Send me an inquiry. Tell me where we’re going. Tell me what you’re dreaming up.
I’d love to photograph it. 🤍
