There’s something so special about photographing families on their own land, and the Rich family’s session just outside of Washington, Iowa reminded me exactly why I love at-home sessions so much. When a family is surrounded by the place they’ve built their life, everything feels a little easier, a little more relaxed, and a whole lot more meaningful.

The Richs are the definition of a close-knit Iowa family. High school sweethearts who’ve grown into hardworking parents of two boys, they’re the kind of family who knows how precious time together really is. Their acreage is full of the everyday moments that make up childhood—exploring the woods, walking the gravel lane, feeding the chickens, and simply being together.

The boys were a blast—easygoing, full of personality, and clearly best friends. Whether they were walking the drive, joking with each other, or proudly holding their chickens, every moment felt real and unposed. That’s the beauty of photographing families at home: kids don’t have to “warm up” to anything. They just get to be themselves.
The whole session unfolded naturally, with the soft fall light, tall trees, and peaceful atmosphere of rural Washington, Iowa creating the perfect backdrop. Nothing forced. Nothing staged. Just an honest record of who they are right now.

As a Washington, Iowa family photographer, these sessions mean a lot to me. Homes carry so much history—especially here in rural Iowa. They tell the story of the work you’ve put in, the memories you’ve made, and the life you’re creating for your kids.
At-home sessions bring out:
And for families like the Richs, it’s clear that the land they’re raising their boys on is a huge part of their story.
If you’ve ever considered doing a session on your own property—whether it’s in Washington, Kalona, Wayland, Mt. Pleasant, Fairfield or anywhere in Southeast Iowa—know that it truly adds something special to your photos. Your home becomes the place where your memories live, not just the backdrop.
